For two or three weeks every autumn, northern New England turns into the most photographed landscape in America. The good news for road-trippers: the region is compact. A 4-6 day loop from Boston covers Vermont's Green Mountains, New Hampshire's White Mountains, and the Maine coast — with every mile of it scenic.

Days 1-2: Boston to the Green Mountains
Drive northwest toward Burlington (3.5 hours direct, but don't go direct). Detour onto VT-100, the spine of the Green Mountains — through Weston, Ludlow, Killington, and Waitsfield — arguably the best foliage road in America. Overnight in Stowe or Waterbury (Ben & Jerry's factory). Ride the Stowe gondola for color from above.
Days 3-4: The White Mountains
Cross into New Hampshire via US-2 or VT-15 to the Kancamagus Highway (NH-112) between Lincoln and Conway: 34.5 miles of national forest with hairpin overlooks and zero commercial development. Nearby: the Flume Gorge boardwalk, the Mount Washington Auto Road (weather permitting), and North Conway's outlet-town lodging.
Day 5: The Maine Coast and Home
Drop east to Portland, Maine for lobster rolls on the working waterfront and the Portland Head Light — foliage against a lighthouse is the trip's closing shot — then an easy two hours back to Boston. With a sixth day, add Cape Cod for off-season beaches.

- Book early: Peak-weekend rooms in Stowe and North Conway sell out 2-3 months ahead; Columbus Day weekend is the busiest of the year.
- Drive on weekdays where possible — the Kancamagus and VT-100 crawl bumper-to-bumper on peak Saturdays.
- Weather: Expect 40s-60s°F and the odd frost; mountain passes can see flurries by mid-October. Pack layers.
- Gas and cell service both disappear on the Kancamagus — fill up in Lincoln or Conway first.
